About PEN

A small group of editing students started the Professional Editors Network in 1984 as an informal way to stay connected. Recently PEN took steps to formalize the group as a nonprofit association, and we developed Mission, Vision and Core Values statements. A volunteer, seven-member board of directors provides management and general oversight. Many other members volunteer to plan and present meetings, research and write newsletter articles, design and publish the newsletter, and update manage the website. Every task is essential to keeping the organization running smoothly.

Over the years we have welcomed copy editors, writers, proofreaders, indexers, book designers and other wordsmiths as members. Most members live in the Midwest, but others reside in states around the U.S. and in Canada. Clearly, if you work with words, PEN is for you no matter where you live.

Our calendar year runs from September through June; we take off July and August. We hold meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, alternating between locations in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Start times also alternate monthly between 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Meeting details are posted to our online calendar and appear in the newsletter. Visitors are welcome to attend two meetings.
